LITTLE BO PEEP

ABOUT MIDNIGHT that night, Scarlet’s com chimed. It was Tom Donovan.

“I don’t have much time,” he said. “But I do have a question. You said I can bring Sappho with me. What about other clones?”

Scarlet put the com on speaker.

“How many and how soon?” Yael asked.

“Who are you?” Tom demanded. “You don’t sound like Casey.”

“This is Yael Anderez, my boss,” Scarlet told him. “He needs to know how many of you are coming so he can arrange transportation.”

“Is that right? You just need to know numbers?”

“The sled we came in only holds six. Scarlet tells me I’m going to need to arrange to transport a horse too.”

There was a small silence before Tom spoke again. “Three of us here are due to be ‘retired’ soon, but I think there will be more out at the ranch. I just need a way to contact them.”

“So, we are talking about 4 people and a horse right now?”

“Actually, 4 people, two horses and a dog.”

“Okay, we can handle that. How soon do you want to leave?”

“We’re ready to go now. Tristan just heard they’re going to take his dog tomorrow when we leave for home.”

“How closely are you watched?”

“Not too much. The Owner doesn’t want to make it obvious he has us under guard because there was a big stink about clones competing against Normals a while back. He doesn’t want anyone to suspect we are clones. He pretends we are Normals, and we have an RV the boss brings for us to sleep in. He’ll lock us in for the night and leave for his hotel. He puts out a press release saying we could stay at the hotel too, but we like our privacy.”

“Okay. Give me a couple of hours to arrange transport. Give Scarlet your coordinates.”

Yael stepped away from the group, taking out his own com to contact the person he had instructed to stand by with a larger transport.

“We’ll see you about 3 AM, then,” Scarlet said.

She turned off the com in time to hear Yael say, “Look, Ray, I know it’s hard to do this at the last moment, but there’s a bonus in it for you if you can deliver.” He listened for a moment, then said, “Thanks man,” before he closed his com.

He saw Scarlet staring at him and grinned at her. “I had enough confidence in your recruiting ability to have a larger transport standing by in case we needed it. Ray typically handles our food shipments.”

“Is Ray one of us?” she asked.

“No, he’s a Normal and he doesn’t know Phoenix is made up of clones. He thinks we’re a part of a criminal organization. I told him we arrange safe places for wanted criminals. As far as he is concerned, it’s better to work for us than for his old bosses.”

Following Ray in the large, refrigerated truck he had fitted out with temporary stalls to accommodate the two horses, they pulled into an old rest stop about three miles from the rodeo grounds.
